BCCR Held a Anti-Book Ban Standout

“Each attempt to ban a book by one of these groups represents a direct attack on every person’s constitutionally protected right to freely choose what books to read and what ideas to explore,” said Caldwell-Stone. "The choice of what to read must be left to the reader or, in the case of children, to parents. That choice does not belong to self-appointed book police.”

“In 1963, Birmingham, Alabama, was perhaps the most racially segregated city in the United States. The campaign launched by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights movement on the segregated streets of Birmingham demonstrated to the world the power of nonviolent direct action.”

Orange Shirt Day, also called National Day for Truth and Reconciliation or National Day of Remembrance, is observed yearly on September 30 in Canada and the United States.

The orange shirt is inspired by Phyllis (Jack) Webstad’s experience of having her orange shirt, given to her by her grandmother, taken away upon arrival to the Mission school. The orange color reminded Webstad of her experience and “how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared and how I felt like I was worth nothing. All of us little children were crying and no one cared.”

For more information about the U.S. and Canadian Residential Schools, and to listen to Phyllis Webstad, click here.

If you're interested in learning more about the residential schools, taking actions, or attending events, the above website is rich with information.

The Special Commission on the State Seal and Motto continues its work this month to gather public feedback on a new seal and motto. In July, the commission partnered with the Center for Survey Research at UMass Boston to design a survey that became available online today. Massachusetts residents can take the survey here. This web-based survey will provide an opportunity for people to have a voice in creating a seal and motto that represents the history and aspirations of Massachusetts.

The commission received an extension to November 15, 2023, to make its final recommendations to the legislature. The survey deadline is 9/27/23 (verified with Brian Boyles, Executive Director, Mass Humanities.org)

I attended the “No Sandmining” protest in Wareham on Saturday, 7/22/23, along with others from surrounding towns that have had enough of the trucks, pollution, acquifer disruption, and more, in Carver, Wareham & Plymouth.  I plan to continue to support the Community Land & Water Coalition as they work constantly to protect our fragile environment from abuses by big business.

Another Gun Awareness Standout

Picture
There have been two mass shootings in TX in the last 10 days, one on April 29th in a TX home, the other on Saturday, May 6, at an outdoor mall. Nevertheless, mass shootings aren't the only cause of gun violence.

The BCCR standout was to raise awareness about guns. According to some sources, the majority of registered voters are in favor of at least some gun control measures, including raising the legal gun-buying age and requiring a 30-day waiting period on gun purchases.
